Rare photo from September, 1961 with O-Sensei and Morihiro Saito

We thought you would enjoy this rare photo of Morihei Ueshiba O-Sensei demonstrating with Morihiro Saito published in the September 1961 issue of the “Aikido Shimbun.”

The caption reads, “Morihei Ueshiba O-Sensei and Morihiro Saito, 6th dan, performing a demonstration in the Aiki Shrine.” I applied a descreening filter in Photoshop to minimize the Moiré pattern of the photo.

It’s a beautiful photo and simply pregnant with meaning that a few will understand.

Perhaps a bit off topic, but my initial gut reaction in seeing this photo was to be reminded of the kind of photo that used to grace the pages of the early mimeographed Aiki News letter. It gave me a wonderful butterfly feeling in my stomach reminiscent of the rush I’d get upon receiving an issue in the mail. Each time I was just sure that there would be some nugget of information that, properly scrutinized, would allow me to unlock the “secrets” of O-sensei and Aikido, or barring that, there would be some miraculous and inspirational story and/or anecdote that would flame the fires of more hopeful training.

I doubt people today can understand the scarcity of information and communication just a few decades ago and what it meant to stumble across an unknown book, meet a fellow traveler and exchange knowledge, or value of some guy who started a news letter and began connecting dots.

I just had a flashback and it was sweet!
