Some years ago, Aikido Journal Editor Stanley Pranin conducted a comprehensive 4-hour lecture on aikido history. The talk touched upon the life and art of Founder Morihei Ueshiba, the famous jujutsu expert, Sokaku Takeda, and the charismatic religious leader, Onisaburo Deguchi, both of whom had a profound impact on Morihei’s career. Many fascinating, little-known details about O-Sensei are revealed that challenge the accepted views of aikido’s birth and evolution.
This presentation was recorded in its entirety and is now available to interested readers in the form of mp3 audio files that can be freely downloaded and played on your computer. In addition to the lecture portion of the program, the lively question and answer sessions that took place are also included.
Stanley Pranin lived in Japan for more than 20 years. As a practitioner and researcher of aikido, he conducted over 300 interviews during his stay in the birthplace of aikido. During that time, he met and interacted with most of the leading figures in the art, many of whom have since left us. Pranin began a newsletter in 1974 called “Aiki News,” which later morphed into “Aikido Journal” magazine, and finally “Aikido Journal,” the world’s leading website on the art. His unique perspectives often depart from the usual portrayal of aikido history, so prepare to have your views of aikido’s origins turned upside down!
